If Mauritius were closer to New York (and if we had unlimited vacation time/bank accounts), it would definitely be our go-to beach destination every winter. It was literally heaven on earth.
We stayed at The St. Regis, which is located on the Le Morne Peninsula in the southwest part of the island. There are an insane amount of beautiful hotels on Mauritius, but we ultimately picked The St. Regis because the west side of the island is shielded from the wind, has incredible sunsets, and it has a super long beach. It pretty much felt like we were on our own island the entire time and we basically never saw other people except at the restaurants!
The food was fabulous – we didn’t have a bad meal – and was a really interesting mix of Indian, French, Asian, and Creole, which is reflective of the culture of Mauritius in general. The people are extremely nice and gracious. The service was the best I’ve ever experienced at a hotel.
Every morning we played tennis and/or worked out, and then lounged on the beach for pretty much the entire rest of the day. Had to do something to cancel out my nightly chocolate molten cake!! The hotel also offers free water sports and activities, and a few times we took out the clear kayak. Mauritius is completely surrounded by a coral reef, so the combo of a clear kayak and crystal clear waters was beautiful!
